Zhongming Fan, born in Shanghai in 1958, graduated from Shanghai Normal University in 1984. He pursued further studies in Japan starting in 1985 and received the prestigious Rockefeller Foundation/Asian Cultural Council Artist Award in 1989, which allowed him to continue his studies in the United States. From 1990 to 1996, he taught at the Tokyo College of Art in Japan. Currently, he resides and works between Shanghai and Tokyo.
